Welcome to Tempo Fitness AI ("Tempo", "we", "us", or "our"). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our mobile application and services (collectively, the "Service"). Please read this Privacy Policy carefully.
By using the Service, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree with the terms of this Privacy Policy, please do not access or use the Service.
1. Information We Collect
1.1 Information You Provide to Us
When you create an account and use Tempo, we collect the following information that you voluntarily provide:
- Account Information: Your name, email address, username, and password when you register for an account
- Profile Information: Your profile picture or avatar initials, and user ID
- Fitness and Wellness Tracking Data: Information you log about your workouts and daily wellness, including:
- Workout logs including exercises, sets, reps, weight, duration, and notes
- Personal records across exercises
- Body weight and body measurements
- Sleep data including duration and sleep quality scores
- Custom habit tracking fields you create
- Daily summaries and notes
- Playground Information: Playground names, invite codes, and membership information for accountability groups you create or join
- Social Connections: Friend connections you make within the app and interactions within Playgrounds and group competitions
- Communication with TempoAI: Questions you ask, conversations you have with our AI coaching assistant, and fitness context stored in TempoAI's memory to personalize coaching over time
- Preferences: Your notification settings, reminder preferences, appearance theme choices, and other customization options
- Payment Information: Subscription and billing information is processed through the Apple App Store and RevenueCat. We do not directly collect or store your payment card information. RevenueCat stores your subscription status and entitlement history to manage your Pro access.
1.2 Health and Fitness Data from Apple HealthKit (iOS)
If you grant permission, we collect health and fitness data from Apple HealthKit on iOS devices. The data types we access include:
- Workout Sessions: Activity type, duration, splits, distance, and source app (e.g., Apple Watch, Strava, GymKit-connected equipment)
- Heart Rate: Heart rate samples recorded during and outside of workouts
- Energy: Active energy burned and basal (resting) energy burned
- Activity Metrics: Step count, Apple Stand Time, flights climbed, and walking/running/cycling/swimming distance
- Activity Rings: Apple Fitness Move, Exercise, and Stand ring goals and daily progress
- Body Weight: Weight measurements recorded by connected devices or apps
- Sleep Analysis: Sleep duration, sleep stages (Core/Light, REM, Deep sleep), in-bed time, and awake time recorded by Apple Watch or other connected devices
Read and Write Access: Tempo reads the data types listed above from Apple HealthKit to display and analyze your fitness and wellness data. Tempo also writes completed workouts back to Apple HealthKit so they appear in Apple Health and count toward your Apple Fitness activity rings. Workouts tracked via the Tempo Apple Watch companion app are written to HealthKit by the watch directly using Apple's live workout builder.
- Permission-Based Access: This data is only collected when you explicitly grant Tempo permission through the iOS Health permissions prompt
- User Control: You can revoke HealthKit permissions at any time through your device's Health app (Settings → Health → Data Access & Devices → Tempo), which will immediately stop new data collection
- No HealthKit Data Sharing: Health data obtained through HealthKit is not shared with third parties except as necessary to provide the Service (e.g., secure database storage, TempoAI analysis)
- Apple's Policies: Our use of HealthKit data is subject to Apple's HealthKit framework terms and policies
1.3 Data from Apple Watch Companion App
When you use the Tempo Apple Watch companion app to track a workout, the watch may collect:
- Sensor Data: Real-time heart rate and active energy burned via the watch's sensors during workouts
- GPS Location: Route and distance data during outdoor workouts such as running, cycling, and swimming, where GPS is available. Location data is associated with the workout record and is not used for any other purpose.
- Motion Data: Movement data used to calculate activity metrics during the workout
This data is synced to your Tempo account via your paired iPhone and written to Apple HealthKit on your behalf, subject to the permissions you have granted.
1.4 Information Collected Automatically
When you use the Service, we automatically collect certain information about your device and usage:
- Device Information: Device type, operating system version, unique device identifiers, and mobile network information
- Usage Data: Features you use, time spent in the app, frequency of use, screens viewed, and other interaction data
- Log Data: IP address, access times, app crashes, and performance data
- Analytics Data: Information about how you use the Service to help us improve functionality and user experience
1.5 Information from Third Parties
We may receive information about you from third-party services you choose to connect with Tempo, including:
- Apple HealthKit: Health and fitness data as described in Section 1.2 (iOS only, with your permission)
- Third-Party Fitness Apps: Workout data from apps such as Strava, Apple Fitness+, and GymKit-connected equipment, shared through Apple HealthKit with your permission
- Authentication Services: Basic profile information from authentication providers if you choose to sign in using a third-party service such as Apple Sign-In
We only collect information from third parties with your explicit consent and in accordance with their respective privacy policies.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect for the following purposes:
- Provide the Service: To create and manage your account, enable workout and wellness tracking, facilitate Playground and social features, and deliver all app functionality
- Health and Fitness Insights: To import, display, and analyze your health data from Apple HealthKit, calculate sleep scores, track workout trends, display activity ring progress, and generate personal records
- TempoAI Coaching: To power our AI coaching assistant, generate personalized workout proposals, provide insights based on your fitness and wellness data, and maintain a coaching memory context across conversations
- HealthKit Write-Back: To write completed workouts from Tempo back to Apple HealthKit so they count toward your Apple Fitness activity rings
- Analytics and Statistics: To display your workout history, volume trends, personal records, sleep quality trends, activity ring analytics, and weekly summaries
- Social Features: To enable Playgrounds, friend connections, personal record leaderboards, group competitions, and (if opted in) the anonymized community group
- Communication: To send you important updates, security alerts, subscription information, and notifications you have opted into
- Service Improvement: To understand how users interact with Tempo, identify bugs, and improve features and performance
- Security: To detect and prevent fraud, abuse, security incidents, and other harmful activities
- Legal Compliance: To comply with legal obligations and respond to lawful requests from authorities
- Business Operations: To process payments, manage subscriptions, provide customer support, and administer the Founding Member program
3. How We Share Your Information
3.1 Sharing Within Playgrounds and Social Features
When you join or create a Playground, your fitness and wellness data becomes visible to other members of that group. This includes:
- Logged workouts, including activity type, duration, and summary metrics
- Sleep data (manually logged and HealthKit-imported) and sleep scores
- Habit completion data
- All other tracked daily activities
Friends you connect with can see your workout activity and personal records on exercise leaderboards. If you opt into the community group feature, your activity is shared with other community members using an anonymized profile that does not display your name or account details.
These are core features of the social experience. You control which Playgrounds you join and which friends you connect with. You can leave any Playground at any time to stop sharing your data with that group.
3.2 Service Providers
We may share your information with third-party service providers who perform services on our behalf, including:
- Supabase: Cloud database hosting and storage for all account and fitness data
- RevenueCat: Subscription management and entitlement tracking for Tempo Pro
- Anthropic (Claude API): Powers TempoAI; your fitness data and conversation content is sent to Anthropic's API to generate coaching responses. This data is processed in accordance with Anthropic's API data policies and is not used to train Anthropic's models.
- Apple App Store: Payment processing for subscriptions
- Analytics providers: To help us understand app usage and improve the Service
- Customer support and communication tools
Important: Health data obtained from Apple HealthKit is treated with the highest level of security and is only shared with service providers strictly necessary to deliver the Service. These providers are contractually obligated to protect your information and may only use it to provide services to us.
3.3 Legal Requirements
We may disclose your information if required to do so by law or in response to valid legal requests, including to:
- Comply with legal obligations, court orders, or government requests
- Protect the rights, property, or safety of Tempo, our users, or the public
- Detect, prevent, or address fraud, security, or technical issues
- Enforce our Terms of Use and other agreements
3.4 Business Transfers
If Tempo is involved in a merger, acquisition, asset sale, bankruptcy, or other business transaction, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you of any such change and the choices you may have regarding your information.
3.5 With Your Consent
We may share your information for any other purpose with your explicit consent.
3.6 Aggregated and De-Identified Data
We may share aggregated or de-identified information that cannot reasonably be used to identify you. For example, we may share general statistics about workout trends, sleep patterns, or app usage with partners or the public.
4. Data Retention
We retain your information for as long as necessary to provide the Service and fulfill the purposes outlined in this Privacy Policy. Specifically:
- Account Information: Retained until you delete your account
- Fitness and Wellness Tracking Data: Retained as long as you maintain your account to preserve your historical data, statistics, and personal records
- HealthKit Data: All health and fitness data imported from Apple HealthKit (workouts, heart rate, sleep, activity metrics, body weight, etc.) is stored in our database as part of your account. Deleting your account will delete this data from our systems.
- TempoAI Conversations and Memory: Conversation history and coaching memory context are retained to provide continuity in TempoAI coaching. This data is not used to train external AI models. It is deleted when you delete your account.
- Usage and Analytics Data: Typically retained for shorter periods unless needed for security or legal purposes
- Subscription Records: RevenueCat retains subscription and transaction history in accordance with their data retention policies and applicable law
When you delete your account, we will delete or anonymize your personal information within a reasonable timeframe, except where we are required to retain certain information for legal, security, or fraud prevention purposes.
Revoking HealthKit Access: If you revoke Tempo's access to Apple HealthKit through your device settings, we will no longer import new health data, but previously imported data will remain in your Tempo account until you manually delete it or delete your account.
5. Your Privacy Rights and Choices
Depending on your location, you may have certain rights regarding your personal information:
- Access: You can access your personal information at any time through your account settings
- Correction: You can update or correct your information through the app
- Deletion: You can request deletion of your account and associated data by contacting us
- Data Portability: You can request a copy of your data in a portable format
- HealthKit Permissions: You can manage Apple HealthKit permissions through your device's Health app (iOS Settings → Health → Data Access & Devices → Tempo)
- Microphone: You can revoke microphone access (used for TempoAI voice mode) through iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone → Tempo
- Notifications: You can manage notification preferences within the app or through iOS Settings → Notifications → Tempo
- Calendar: You can revoke calendar access (used for workout sync) through iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Calendars → Tempo
- Opt-Out: You can opt out of non-essential communications through app settings
- Playground and Social Privacy: You can leave any Playground at any time, and you can remove friend connections through the app

6. Data Security
We implement appropriate technical and organizational security measures to protect your information against unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction. These measures include:
- Encryption of data in transit and at rest
- Secure authentication and password protection
- Regular security assessments and updates
- Limited access to personal information by employees and contractors on a need-to-know basis
- Compliance with Apple's HealthKit framework security requirements for health data
- Row-level security on our database to ensure users can only access their own data
However, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is 100% secure. While we strive to use commercially acceptable means to protect your information, we cannot guarantee absolute security. You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials.
7. Children's Privacy
Tempo is not intended for use by children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us immediately, and we will take steps to delete that information from our systems.
If we discover that we have collected personal information from a child under 13 without proper parental consent, we will delete that information promptly.
8. International Data Transfers
Your information may be transferred to and processed in countries other than your country of residence, including the United States, where our servers and service providers (including Supabase, RevenueCat, and Anthropic) are located. These countries may have different data protection laws than your country.
By using the Service, you consent to the transfer of your information to the United States and other countries where we operate. We take appropriate measures to ensure your information receives an adequate level of protection wherever it is processed.
9. Third-Party Links and Services
The Service may connect with third-party platforms and services, including Apple HealthKit, Apple Fitness+, Strava, and GymKit-compatible equipment. This Privacy Policy does not apply to those third-party services. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of third parties, and we encourage you to review their privacy policies.
Apple HealthKit data is governed by Apple's privacy policies and terms. We comply with Apple's HealthKit framework requirements for handling health data.
10. California Privacy Rights
If you are a California resident, you have specific rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), including:
- The right to know what personal information we collect, use, disclose, and sell
- The right to request deletion of your personal information
- The right to opt-out of the sale of your personal information (note: we do not sell personal information, including health data)

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technology, legal requirements, or other factors. When we make material changes, we will notify you by:
- Posting the updated Privacy Policy in the app with a new "Last updated" date
- Sending you an email notification (if you have provided an email address)
- Displaying a prominent notice within the app
Your continued use of the Service after the effective date of the updated Privacy Policy constitutes your acceptance of the changes. If you do not agree to the updated Privacy Policy, you should stop using the Service and may delete your account.
